At the end of 2020 there were approximately 3,000 midwifery vacancies here in the UK. The number of vacancies increased by 20% since 2019. There is a high demand in Midwives here in the UK. Here are a few benefits of becoming a Midwife in the UK:
Ensuring a healthy pregnancy during the early stages - In the early stages of a pregnancy as well as throughout the pregnancy the midwife provides or arranges for various screening tests to ensure a healthy pregnancy or to detect any problems that may need treatment. The assessment usually takes up to two hours and can include a full health and family history, taking blood samples to test for infections.
Expanding your knowledge and training - One exciting aspect of a midwifes role is that an experienced midwife can train further to specialise in maternity ultrasonography. This would often depend on the needs of the hospital which would provide the funding and practise placement for this career development.
Helping new parents - Midwives get to teach new parents about the benefits of breast feeding and more useful information regarding the babies and the mothers health. They are also able to offer them advice which can make the parents feel less stressed as they trust that the midwife is there to help them.
