As a medical doctor, you’ve spent a large proportion of your life dedicated to the study of the human body. You’ve learnt what makes it work and how to heal your patients when they are sick. That’s why, if you’re an overseas doctor, we here at IELTS Medical would like to make it easy for you to choose to make the UK your home. Depending on your level of qualification and experience, there are several pathways to UK registration and one such pathway is via the Plab 1 and Plab 2 exams.
What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a high-stakes language exam that is accepted by the General Medical Council as proof of your language proficiency. The target band scores are 7.5 overall; minimum 7.0 in IELTS Listening; 7.0 in IELTS Reading; 7.0 in IELTS Speaking and 7.0 in IELTS Writing.
What is OET?
OET stands for Occupational English Test. It is an alternative to IELTS that is also accepted by the General Medical Council for GMC registration purposes. The target grades are B in OET (Medicine) Listening; OET (Medicine) Reading; OET (Medicine) Speaking and OET (Medicine) Writing.
What is Plab 1?
PLAB 1 is a computer based theory exam made up of 180 multiple choice. It has a three hour time limit and covers topics, skills and procedures that a doctor faced by a doctor working in the UK.
What is Plab 2?
PLAB 2 is a Medical OSCE (objective structured clinical exam) that is made up of 16 scenarios. Each scenario lasts eight minutes and aims to reflect real life settings including a mock consultations and acute wards.
