What is the NMC?
The NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) is the largest healthcare regulator in the UK.
Its purpose is to ‘promote and uphold the highest professional standards in nursery and midwifery to protect the public and inspire confidence in the profession’.
The NMC is also responsible for dealing with any serious concerns raised about a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate’s fitness to practice.
You must register with the NMC in order to become a fully qualified nurse or midwife.
What the NMC does:
· Set education standards, which shape the content and design of programmes and state the competencies of a nurse, midwife or nursing associate.
· Approve education institutions and programmes and maintain a database of approved programmes (courses).
· Deliver quality assurance of its approved programmes.
· Register nurses, midwives, and nursing associates when they have successfully completed their courses.
· Assess and ensure the quality of practice placements for students.
What the NMC does not do:
· Set curricula. This is done by the Approved Education Institutions (AEI) and practice partners in line with our standards.
· Regulate students. If there are concerns about a student, this is dealt with by the AEI.
· Assess the ability of practice settings to support students’ learning. This is also done by AEIs.
· Assess the quality of care in hospitals or the community. This is the responsibility of other regulators: The Care Quality Commission in England, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and Northern Ireland’s Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority.
What do I need to register?
You can register as either: a nurse, a midwife, or a nursing associate.
· You must have your qualification in nursing, and this qualification must be equivalent to a foundation degree minimum.
The NMC will not be able to consider your application if your qualification does not meet this criteria.
· Step 1: language test (unless exempt)
The NMC accepts:
o The International English Language Test System (IELTS)
o The Occupational English Test (OET)
These must be done to ensure that you have the ability to communicate effectively and coherently in English.
(If you have not done either of these yet then book with iELTS Medical to take yours today! We also offer extensive training and preparation courses)

Nurses in all three fields of nursing (Adult; Children's and Mental Health) and Midwives must demonstrate competencies across the following four areas:
• Professional values.
• Communication + interpersonal skills.
• Nursing practice, decision making and leadership.
• Management and team working.
There is a registration fee required upon signing up. (Please refer to nmc.ieltsmedical.co.uk for more information on the registration process)
If you are an NMC registrant, you must revalidate every three years. To do so, you will need to demonstrate 450 practice hours, or 900 if you are revalidating as a nurse and/or midwife. These hours must be within whatever your scope of practice is.
*Important to note that NMC does not educate or select students. This is done by IELTS Medical.
