Our Trip to Ulster CTC

Last week we took a trip to Ulster University and visited the CTC exam center. It was a very eye-opening experience speaking with the staff and seeing the nurses in action. We first arrived at Derry airport which was a short commute to the exam, and much easier in comparison to arriving at Belfast. On arrival we saw the exam center located in the heart of the university and had a chat with the nurses in the waiting room, as they waited to be called in for their exams.
The exam at Ulster’s CTC is a pleasant experience. When you are called, you are shown to the lockers where you can leave your personal belongings. But what can you bring into the exam. you may ask? We were advised that nurses and midwives are only allowed to carry to their exam a fob watch, water and a pen. You will then arrive into an alternative waiting room where the very pleasant NMC staff will be reviewing your documents to ensure that everything is up to date. This room also has a Dinamap ((Device for Indirect Non-invasive Automated MAP measurement)) for you to use to practice whilst waiting to be walked in your examination bay.
In the exam room, which is presented just like the UK wards, there are 12 examination bays. To ensure the smooth running of the exam, there are numerous staff covering the timing with a wall of clocks for each bay and each station. There is also a screen with the candidates’ names and which stage they are at in the exam, to track the day. One of the most important rooms in the CTC center is the invigilating room where the staff work very hard to be vigilant and monitor multiple screens to ensure they give accurate feedback.
Then, once you’ve finished your exam, it takes between 0-5 days to receive your results.
