OET for Doctors is a medical English exam for doctors seeking to register in the UK

The Occupational English Test (Medicine) or OET for Doctors is a medical English exam for international doctors seeking to register in the UK. The exam tests your English knowledge in a healthcare context using texts and activities that you will likely be using in your UK job.

What is the OET Listening test like?

OET Listening is a prime example of this. It’s split into three parts. In the first, you listen to a pair of healthcare professional–patient consultation that lasts around five minutes each. In the second part, you listen to six short extracts that use examples of the types of situations you would hear in the healthcare environment. The final part – Listening Part C – includes longer text where you listen to the types of medical presentations akin to TedMed – the annual health and medicine conference with guest speakers who are thought leaders in the healthcare field.

What is the OET Reading test like?

The OET Reading module has a similar format to OET Listening in that it is three parts. It also has a second and third part that are multiple choice with the latter being longer than the former. However, this is where the similarities mostly end. One striking feature of the OET Reading is Part A, the 15-minute speed reading task. In this task, doctors are required to quickly digest a set of four texts and skim and scan them to obtain answers to, predominantly, short answer questions.

What is the OET Speaking test like?

Or take the OET Speaking subtest, for example. This consists of two five-minute roleplays where you play your professional role and consult with your patient. Prior to each test, you are given a roleplay card with details of your scenario, as well as a few minutes to read it. Then, sat across from an interlocutor playing your patient, you engage in a roleplay to explore your patient’s presenting problem. Scenarios can range from fractures to seizures or runny noses to bleeding. The variety of the exam adds to the challenge and excitement you’ll likely feel when preparing for and taking the OET for Doctors.

What is the OET Writing test like?

Another example of the OET’s pragmatism is the OET Writing tasks. To demonstrate your English writing competency, the test is to read a set of case notes and respond by producing a letter. Case notes have varying subjects and patients have differing histories and diagnoses, which helps you to expand your skills. The necessary growth in your professional writing and lexical resources that is required to fulfil the task, makes this a more satisfying test of your English writing skills than other language exams.
