Nurses are the backbone and foundation of the healthcare system. The heart and soul of healthcare They are on the frontlines of the healthcare industry, and while doctors and consultants ultimately deliver treatment, nurses provide the majority of support and care. In a recent study of the time healthcare practitioners spend with intensive care patients, about 86% of such time was spend with nurses, compared to only 13% with physicians. During overnight hospital stays, the time a nurse spends with a patient is even greater.

Overarching goals of nurses include:

·        Ensuring a safe and clean environment

·        High quality care to patients

·        Educating patients and family/carers on treatments and medications

The long time spent with patients provide unique insights to the patient’s wants and needs, making nurses important advocate for their care. This is critical as the patients’ charts may not provide the full picture and nurses might uncover an important detail that they can relay to the healthcare team.

One challenge across the UK is low heath literacy among patients. Doctors hold deep and complex knowledge which can be challenging to communicate with patients. Nurses dedicate a lot of their time and energy bridging that knowledge gap by informing patients about their treatments and medications in more layman’s terms.

Currently there at 704,520 nurses on permanent NMC register in the UK. Last year, there were 681,525 nurses, meaning there was a 3.37% increase year-on-year. Most of these nurses are Adult Nurses – 567,291.
