Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to Launch English Language Consultation This Summer

The NMC is set to launch a public consultation on proposed changes to English language requirements for overseas nurses and midwives. At present, the NMC accepts three evidence types as proof of meeting its English language requirements. These include an overal 7.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam or 3Bs & 1 C+ in the Occupational English Test (OET) or proof of registration and work in an English speaking country where the IELTS or OET was a registration requirement.

However, due to concerns that many overseas-qualified nurses have been unable to pass the language test and achieve registration, despite living and working as healthcare assistants for many years in the UK, other evidence types may be permitted instead.

In Summer 20222, the NMC is set to launch an eight-week public consultation, to hear a case for change and consider what changes could be made. This may include English language references from employers, postgraduate qualifications that are taught and examined in English, or evidence of unregulated practice in a UK healthcare setting.

This is a positive step for many international nurses who have been working in the UK for many years as healthcare assistants, whilst making many unsuccessful attempts to meet the language requirements.

Here at IELTS Medical, we continue to help overseas nurses to meet the NMC's registration requirement and we are ready to help overseas qualified nurses and midwives to navigate any hurdles in the way.
