NHS 75th Birthday
The NHS is one of the most well recognised institutions in the UK and it has been serving the population tirelessly since its inception in 1948, meaning it turned 75 years old on 5th July 2023! The NHS was the first universal healthcare service in the world available to all, something for all of the country to be proud of.
In 2023 the NHS is still working day and night to provide care to us when we need it, whether that be provided by Midwives, Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists or Cleaners. Over 1 million people a day are helped by the NHS, showing the scale of the care this service is able to provide.
The NHS showed its ability to roll with the punches during the covid-19 pandemic, which began in January 2020. The vaccine rollout began shortly after the pandemic began affecting the UK, starting with vaccinations for the elderly and vulnerable as these groups were most at risk of serious complications from the virus. The delivery of this vaccine was testament to the bravery, hard work and organisation of the NHS, and saved many lives.
Demographically, the UK has seen so much change since 1948. The NHS has evolved with this change and continues to reflect the society in which it operates, 1 in 6 people in the UK are from minority ethnic backgrounds as of 2023 and 24.2% of the NHS workforce are from these backgrounds, showing representation of the country as a whole.
Another change in the UK has been the ageing population trend with 1 in 5 being 65 years old or over, as quality of care and lifestyles generally are improving people are living longer lives. The NHS has been able to adapt certain areas of care provision to be remotely offered, which is helping with keeping spaces available in hospitals and stopping overcrowding.
