What’s News ?

Here at IELTS Medical, we offer a wide range of courses for different sectors in the medical industry. In this blog, we’d like to share with you news from around the world from each of these fields.

Doctors and Nurses

HIV Breakthrough!

According to the Weill Cornell Medicine physician-scientists, a patient living with HIV and cancer has defeated the virus after receiving rare but dangerous stem cell treatment.

The scientists state that the doctors performed haploidentical transplantation which uses umbilical cord blood and bone marrow from a donor that must have a rare mutation that makes them resistant to the virus. She is the 4th person to ever be cured of HIV but they have stressed that they’d only ever do the procedure to people in the latter stages of cancer diagnosis who are likely to die as the risk of death is too high.

Dentistry

Twelve-day-old baby has tooth removed.

One in 2000 babies are born with visible teeth according to the British Dental Association, which can cause problems with breastfeeding or create a risk of the child swallowing it. Despite the fact most infants begin teething at 6 months old, Isla was born with a single tooth on her lower gum. She was given some numbing cream because she was too young to be given anaesthetic. For her bravery, Isla was given a sticker after being the youngest patient at Seven Trees Dental Access Centre.

Vet

The launch of the Vet Academy!

A graduate academy has been created for new vets working in independent practices to aid their first steps in the profession. There are current struggles to retain new vets across the country with its challenging recruitment environment. It will be a one-year program with different courses, online training programs, workshops mentorship and case discussion. The coaches believe this will offer great support to new graduates, giving them the “confidence and competence directly in context with the day-one clinical skills that all employers are looking for in their new graduates.”
