What is the NMC OSCE?
The OSCE is a practical exam that’s part of the ‘Test of competence’ to ensure you can practice safely and effectively in the UK. Also, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are at the level required to meet the NMC pre-registration learning disability nursing standards.
A new version of the Test of Competence was launched 2 August 2021, in which the new OSCE has 10 stations instead of 6. All overseas and ‘Return to Practice’ nurses need to make sure they get the updated resources and material to pass this new OSCE and these aren’t widely available as of yet.
In addition to renewing the contracts with the current OSCE delivery partners – Oxford Brookes University, the University of Northampton and Ulster University – the NMC have awarded contracts to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Northumbria University. This follows a competitive and open bidding process across all four countries of the UK.
By increasing the number of tests sites, the NMC have increased capacity and improved accessibility for those taking the OSCE. This will support the NMC in meeting demand and to get those professionals with the right skills and knowledge on the register as safely and quickly as possible.
The NMC will also share supporting materials on 29 October, they will be publishing it for the new ToC for nursing associates, which goes live in January 2022.

The move to expand test centre provision for nurses from overseas comes at a time when international recruitment continues to be a key driver for addressing nurse shortages.
Candidates will be able to book their tests from December, and further information on how to do this will be shared at that time.
