What is the MRCGP?

The Membership of Royal College of General Practitioners is a postgraduate medical qualification in the United Kingdom.

How does the exam work?

So, the MRCGP exam is made up out of two different exams, the AKT and the CSA. The AKT is a theory test that is held in a selected centre. The exam consists of two hundred questions and the candidates have three hours and ten minutes to complete the exam. Approximately 80% of the questions are based on clinical knowledge. 10% is based on evidence-based practise and the other 10% is based on primary acre organisation and management issues.

The CSA is a Clinical Skills Assessment which is made up of thirteen ten-minute consultations, they will measure the doctor’s ability to use their clinical and practical knowledge. The objective of the exam is to assess a doctor’s ability to gather information and apply what you have learnt towards disease processes, person centred care approximately in a standardised context, make evidence-based decisions, and communicate effectively with patients and colleagues. Being able to integrate these skills effectively is a key element of this assessment.

The Applied Knowledge Test is a computer-based assessment that contributes to the MRCGP. It tests the knowledge base behind independent general practise in the UK within the context of the NHS. The AKT takes place three times at year at Pearson VUE test centres across the UK.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Clinical Skills Assessment has been replaced with the Recorded Consultation Assessment (RCA).

The RCA is an assessment of a doctor’s ability to integrate and apply clinical, professional, communication and practical skills appropriate for general practice. The assessment uses pre-recorded video or audio consultations.

The exam will provide an objective assessment of clinical skills from realistic environments that are provided from thirteen consultations.

Each consultation will be viewed independently by at least one examiner who will make a global judgement of that consultation, attributing marks in three domains and blind to other marks the candidate receives for that or any other consultation.

How much do the exams cost?

The current exam fee for the Applied Knowledge test is £459.00.

The current exam fee for the Recorded Consultation Assessment is £1050.00

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the MRCGP exam has changed, to reduce the amount of contact between people the exam board has replaced the CSA with the RCA. It is more than likely that you will be isolated during your Clinical Skills assessment.
