The main areas of PLAB exam

The PLAB exam covers a lot of content but can be mainly broken down into 4 main areas, making studying easier for your exam.

4 main areas

·         Diagnosis

·         Investigation

·         Clinical practice

·         Management/treatment

Area 1: Diagnosis

Diagnosis is one of the important areas as this is where doctors must obtain correct information about the patient. To ensure that they can make the right diagnosis for the symptoms that the patient was describing.

During the exam you will be given a list of possible diagnosis.

The information can range from many different things about the patient, for example:

·         Nature of presenting symptoms

·         Duration of symptoms

·         Age

·         Sex

·         Medical history

Area 2: Investigation

Investigation is all about linking the key information, that you have learnt about the patient. And to provide the key to the diagnosis.

In the exam there is two ways they will test your investigation skills.

First Way

You will be given the important facts about a patient; you will be asked to select the investigation which is most likely to provide the correct diagnosis.

Second Way

You may be given the findings of investigations and asked to relate these to a patient and condition.  In some cases, they will ask you to choose the most appropriate next course of action.

Area 3: Clinical practice

Clinical practice is all about the way you act with your patient and how you get your diagnosis across to them. One thing you may be tested on in clinical practice is the principles of epidemiology, and on the prevalence of important diseases in the UK.

The main things to remember for clinical practice.

·         Explanation of disease process

·         Legal ethical

·         Practice of evidence-based medicine

·         Understanding of epidemiology

·         Health promotion

Area 4: Management

Management is all about your medical treatment and knowledge of drugs.

A common way they will test you on this is by giving you a patient note and ask you to choose the correct drug therapy and will be expected to know about side effects of the drug you have chosen for that patient.
