Internationally educated nurses transitioning successfully into work in the UK NHS

The NHS is currently facing a staffing crisis between all clinical healthcare professionals with estimated registered nurse vacancies in excess of 41,000. In order to fill theses vacancies, many healthcare organisations are recruiting internationally educated nurses. Due to Brexit the number of IENs registering with or leaving the NMC has been affected, with a decrease in the number of nurses and midwives registering from the European Economic Area (EEA) from past years. Although there has been a decrease in the number of registrants from the EEA, there has been a 5.55% increase of registrants from outside the EEA since 2018. Another reason for the reduction in nurses and midwives applying for the register is the Covid-19 pandemic, because of the pandemic travel restrictions were imposed as a result migration has become less desirable for some.

To ensure that the UK and NHs remains desirable adequate support mechanisms have been put into place to ensure integration, patient safety and high retention rates.
