Hello in today's blogpost I will explain how an overseas doctor can begin practising within the UK. I will also be going through the qualifications and costs of the exams.
The first step is to achieve a level B2 for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The CEFR is a system that is used to measure and describe language levels for foreign language learners.
Once have achieved your English level B2 then you must register with the General Medical Council. The General Medical Council is a public body that maintains the official register of medical practitioners within the United Kingdom.
After you have registered with the GMC you can begin preparing for your language exam, you can choose between the IELTS (International Language Testing System) or the OET (Occupational English Test). The IELTS exam covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking; the content reflects everyday situations.
The current IELTS exam fee is between £175 - £190 depending on where your location.

The OET exam assesses four main skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Unlike IELTS, OET checks your knowledge of English only when it involves medicine. It is considered easier to pass and more accepted by NHS and other organisations hiring Doctors.
The current OET exam fee is £320.00

After doing so, you will need to begin preparing for your PLAB (Professional and Linguistics Assessment Boards) exam. The exam covers the common, important or acute conditions (those common in emergency departments) seen by trainees entering the second year of the Foundation Programme and the management of long-term conditions seen in primary care. The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test – known as the PLAB test – helps us to make sure doctors who qualified abroad have the right knowledge and skills to practise medicine in the UK.
The current PLAB 1 exam fee is £239.00
The last step is to prepare and sit your PLAB 2 exam, PLAB 2 is an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). It's made up of 16 scenarios, each lasting eight minutes and aims to reflect real life settings including a mock consultation or an acute ward.
The current PLAB 2 exam fee is £875.00
