Everything you need to know about NMC's CBT exam
Customers are responsible for booking their exams. They will need permission to test by obtaining a letter from the NMC. They can do so via the Pearson Vue website here: https://home.pearsonvue.com/nmc
The NMC's Test of Competence (ToC) is used to assess the skills and knowledge of those who seek to join the NMC register from overseas or rejoin after a long period away from practice. If you don't have enough practice hours for readmission to the register, you can either complete an approved return to practice programme or take a Test of Competence to meet the practice hours requirement.
Each Test of Competence is split into two parts:
· A multiple-choice computer-based test known as CBT.
· A practical test is known as the OSCE.
You will need to take a test that's specific to the part of the register you're applying to join or rejoin. These are:
· adult nurse (RNA)
· mental health nurse (RNMH)
· learning disabilities nurse (RNLD)
· children's nurse (RNC)
· midwife (RM)
· nursing associate (NAR)
To proceed with your NMC application, you must complete both components of the ToC. A computer-based exam (CBT) is part of the ToC and can be taken at any Pearson VUE test and assessment centre. To proceed with your NMC application, you must successfully complete both components of the ToC. A computer-based exam (CBT) is part of the ToC and can be taken at any Pearson VUE test and assessment centre. You must pass the CBT and OSCE within two years of each other. You can sit your CBT or OSCE in any order, but you need to complete both parts to continue with your application for initial registration or readmission. Once you have successfully passed both the CBT and OSCE, your ToC will remain valid for five years
You can book your CBT online or over the phone once the NMC has informed you that you will need to take it. The NMC will notify you of the deadline for completing your CBT, and we will not be able to change it. Reservations can be made up to one working day ahead of time. You will receive notification of any bookings, reschedules, and cancellations by email.
Once the test is completed, your result is then submitted and calculated. You will receive a pass or fail result for each part of the test: Part A (Numeracy) and Part B (Clinical). You can check your CBT results in the exam report given to you directly after your CBT or your Pearson Vue account within 48 hours of your CBT - click on the relevant exam entry in the 'Exam history' section to see a further breakdown of results for Part A and B. Your NMC Online account will update within 48 hours of your CBT too, but it will only show an overall exam result for each attempt
