London is a huge city with over 9 million people living within London and the Greater London area. Its classed as one of the worlds megacities, and has a reputation for being extremely busy with bustling commerce areas and people experiencing the world-famous sights and activities on offer.
We understand that not everyone enjoys the pace and busy nature of city life and look to live somewhere nearby and travel into work each day. Then, they return to the peace and quiet of the town they live in at the end of the day.
This blog post is intended to highlight some examples of commuter towns and cities near to London that our learners may consider living in if they feel like London life may be too busy for them. Another consideration of those that choose to live in a commuter town outside London may be that the quieter environment may be safer and more enjoyable for children.
The towns and cities included in this blogpost are examples of what it’s like for commuters living in areas surrounding London, what facilities and activities there are to be done whilst not working and spending time with friends and relatives.
Windsor
Windsor is a picturesque town located in Berkshire. Windsor castle famously is located in the town and has many different shops and boutiques with tons of character. Legoland, is located in Windsor and is a fantastic day out for families with loads to do.
Chelmsford
This is Essex’s smallest city and combines a perfect mix of urban and rural charm. Frequent trains run between Chelmsford and London Liverpool Street each day making it a very convenient place for commuters into London to live.
Slough
Slough is a stop on the relatively new Elizabeth Line, and you can reach Paddington in 25-30 minutes. This is a significant improvement on the previous travel time from Slough to London Paddington. There is a lot to do in Slough, a recent £3 billion investment into improving the services and quality of life in the area has dramatically impact the lifestyle in Slough. Leisure facilities have improved as well as many jobs being available in the area.
St Albans
St Albans is a small city, with a cathedral located in its centre which is rich in history. There is plenty to do in the city, you can pack your free time with trips out to museums, churches and old-fashioned traditional markets.
St Albans is very easily accessible from London; in as little as 20 minutes you can reach the capital making the town perfect for commuters who want to live in a quiet area but need to access London.
Bracknell
Bracknell is one of the most affordable commuter towns to London, its easily accessible from central London and is on the Waterloo to Reading train line making it a prime location for commuters looking to live near London and travel into work in the city.
Bracknell has over 150 parks and green spaces and has lovely routes for cycling and walking. Also, a 20-year local investment project costing over £770 million intended to improve residential, commercial and retail spaces and local infrastructure in the area has been very successful.
