What Brexit means for Nurses and Midwives

After years of discussions, it’s finally done. The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union has happened.

And now, we are all wondering the same thing “What does that mean for me?”.

Already NMC registered

If you are a Nurse or Midwife and are already on the NMC register, you will not need to change anything.

Not yet NMC registered

If you are a Nurse or Midwife and are applying to join the register:

·         If you trained in the EU, EEA or EFTA:

If your application to the NMC was started before 31st December 2020 and the assessment fee has been paid, there will be no change.

However, if you register after January 1st 2021, you may have to pay different fees and a small number of people with certain qualifications may have their skills and knowledge assessed by the Test of Competence and this will be determined by the NMC.

·         If you are an Adult Nurse or Midwife:

If you meet the EU requirements for recognition by the NMC, you will not be required to take a Test of Competence.

The total cost for this application and registration is £293.

·         If you are a specialist Nurse (Mental Health, Paediatric, Learning Disability):

A specialist Nurse will require a Test of Competence from January 1st, regardless if you hold EU qualifications or Overseas Qualifications.

The total cost for application and registration is £1,170.

We hope the situation is clearer for you now.
