What is the International Recruitment Programme and how does it help you to become a GP in the UK?

In today’s blog post we will explain how the International Recruitment Programme can help you become a practicing doctor in the UK.

We hope this blog post will help you understand the role of a UK-based GP. We recommend you to get as familiar with the International Recruitment Programme as you can. The program is linked with NHS and it is designed to assess overseas practitioners and family doctors to get them working in the UK as soon as possible.

International recruitment program:

The main route available to established doctors outside of the UK is the GP International Induction Programme. The program provides a safe and direct route for GPs to join the NHS general practice in England. If you choose to join the recruitment scheme you will gain access to benefits and tailored support that will help you to finish the program successfully. You will also have a dedicated account manager to help you through the process.

Doctors who were trained outside of the EEA will need to have a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration. Alternative CEGPR routes are available for doctors from, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa.

For the right to practice in the UK as GP or family doctor you will need to meet the following requirements:

You must be registered and licensed at the General Medical Council. The GMC will check your qualifications and whether your training is equivalent to a trained GP.

You must also prove that as a GP you have the necessary knowledge of English to communicate effectively so that the wellbeing of patients will not be at risk. The minimum score of the English Language Testing System (IELTS) the candidate has to reach is 7.0 in all four areas (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) plus an overall score of 7.5 is required by the GMC.

Lastly, you must meet the immigration requirements which are set by the Home Office, and have permission to work. There are alternative routes for the International Induction Programme for GPs who need visas to work. You must complete an induction and be listed on the NHS Medical Performers List. The Medical Performers List states that you are fit to practice as an independent practitioner.

The role of working as a GP in England:

General Practitioners deal with an extensive variety of health problems and they are usually the first person a patient would contact in case of any health-related issues. They are the general experts within the field of medicine and they assist children as well as adults.

GPs often work in practices where they might lead teams of nurses, healthcare assistants, practice managers, receptionists, and other staff. A GP provides continuous medical care for their patients and they can refer their patients to hospitals or clinics.

GPs manage the widest range of health problems providing:

  • diagnoses and risk assessments
  • support for people with complex and multiple health conditions
  • coordination of long-term care
  • support for the physical, social and psychological aspects of patients’ wellbeing throughout their lives
