In order for a nurse or midwife to practice in the UK they must have completed an English-speaking exam. The language exam assesses a Nurse or midwife’s abilities to speak, listen, read and write. There are two English language exams that one of which can be chosen, IELTS and OET.

What is the difference between IELTS and OET?

Although both exams consist of four categories: reading, speaking, writing, and listening. The OET tests your ability to communicate in English in a healthcare setting. This includes your ability to understand patients and build a relationship with them, conduct medical consultations as well as write referral or discharge letters. Every part of the OET exam is related to real life scenarios in the workplace for healthcare professionals. Whereas IELTS tests your overall ability to communicate in the English language. Meaning every part of the exam can be on a different topic which may not be related to healthcare.

Preparation for exams

To prepare for IELTS you would have to learn large amounts of vocabulary, which will allow you to understand texts easier as well as understand discussions and give opinions. One way in which you can practice your speaking and listening skills is talking much more regularly in English to family members or friends. Preparing for OET would require Nurses and Midwife’s to learn a wide range of healthcare related language so that your able to understand medical terms and texts.
