Another consideration to make, which will likely take a long time to work out, is where in the UK you choose to live. Whilst the UK is famously a small country, (the UK could fit into the US state of Texas 2.8 times!) there are many cities and towns with vibrant, lively culture to enjoy working and living in.

This blogpost contains some of the top cities to live in in the UK, the criteria for ranking includes pay levels, quality of healthcare, cost of living, attractions and things to do.

London

London is a great place to live and work for Nurses, there is a high demand for nurses in the capital, also there is state of the art equipment and facilities present in hospitals in London.

Also, London has a very diverse population, it is a truly global city with many different communities present in the city, this is a good thing for someone looking to settle in the UK as it means a wide variety of international foods and goods can be found, giving some sense of home comforts.

London is an expensive place to live, the cost of living in the city is higher than elsewhere in the UK which can be frustrating but wages in nursing in the city are higher than other places in the UK which evens this out slightly.

In terms of cons, living in London incurs a high cost of living for travel, food and rent among other expenses due to the global nature of the city. Another downside of London living is the traffic and congestion, which occurs daily. Travelling by car in London is likely to take a long time and the trains and tubes are often rather chaotic during rush hour, but outside of rush hour public transport in London is wide reaching and effective generally.

Manchester

Manchester is one of the most popular cities in the UK, there is a large music scene and plenty of attractions such as museums and restaurants, and a high quality tram service through the city centre and outskirts. Also, there is a growing demand for healthcare professionals in Manchester, so nurses will not struggle to find work in this city.

The cost of living in Manchester is lower than London, meaning nurses can enjoy their free time with all the activities and attractions on offer or they can put away a portion of their money for savings or holidays or anything else.

On the downside, Manchester is notoriously a rainy and overcast place to live. Depending on where you’re moving from, this kind of weather consistently may be something you struggle to adapt to. Its possible you are not bothered by weather conditions such as these, but it’s still a notable consideration to make.

Liverpool

Liverpool, in the north west, is one of the most culturally significant cities in the UK, it has a bustling social and music scene and plenty of things to do. One of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK is also based there, with high demand for nurses in all areas meaning work opportunities are not hard to come by.

The cost of living in Liverpool is low when compared to the likes of London, nurses living here are likely to have more disposable income to spend on their days off. Competitive salaries in a high-quality area for healthcare provision is definitely a draw for nurses looking to work and live in Liverpool.

Possible drawbacks in terms of living and working in Liverpool include unpredictable weather at times during the year, it probably depends from person to person if this is a factor that may be a put off for Liverpool. Another potential drawback is high crime rates present in some areas of the city; most areas are not high in crime but this is definitely information to note.
