Pregnancy and Birth are major events in the life of a woman and for her family. Midwives provide care for women throughout their pregnancy and childbirth. For this reason, they must be on point to prevent or notice if any complications take place. To be a midwife, there are many personal qualities and skills needed. Some of these skills include:

1.   Listening and general communication.

Having general communication skills is essential as mothers, especially new ones, will often need advice and support. Being able to communicate and listen effectively will make the mother feel comfortable and at ease when wanting to ask to support as they will know you are there to support them.

2.   Having an understanding and caring attitude.

By having an understanding, a caring attitude, mothers will feel as they are in the right hands and prevent them from being stressed or worried. This is beneficial to the mother as well as yourself as you will be able to build a relationship with the mother, therefore, relieving some of her stress and worries.

3.   An ability to get on well with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

The best thing about working in the UK is while working you will meet many people from different backgrounds. You will be able to learn new things about different cultures.  Some people may have different customs and traditions from yourself, you must always respect this and treat people the way you want to be treated.

4.  Emotional and mental strength.

You must make sure you focus on your own emotional and mental state as well as the mental health of the mothers you will be caring for. If you’re struggling mentally, it could affect your job as you will be less observant and focused. This could also have a bad effect on the mothers you care for which we do not want as they are your responsibility.
