Study tips – how to study effectively for my PLAB 1/PLAB 2 tests
- By (26 articles)
Studying for your PLAB tests can be a very daunting task. That’s why we’ve selected 5 study tips that will help you be a successful and effective student while and after you take your course with us:
1. Colour coding
I know this seems unimportant, but your brain works best in codes. Colour coding your notes can help your brain classify information that will be easily accessed when you think about a specific topic. Trust me!
2. Summarize key points
After learning a topic instead of just re-reading what was taught, write the key point you are trying to study on one side of a flash card and write down succinctly what you remember about it on the other. Try saying it out loud first, as if teaching someone, and then register your thoughts. After, check your notes to see if what you remember is correct or if you missed something.
3. Review constantly
After summarizing the key points on a flash card, use it for quick reviews of the topic studied frequently. Explain to yourself what the topic is, how to use it and etc. and then check the correct answer on the back. That will help you assess what you need to focus on and will keep the content fresh in your mind.
4. Use mind maps
The structure of a mind map is related to how our brains store and retrieve information. Mind mapping your notes can improve your understanding of a topic. It also helps you to see the big picture by showing the hierarchy and relationships between concepts and ideas.
5. Be kind to yourself
Finally, being hard on yourself doesn’t help you succeed at all. Be kind to yourself. Take lots of breaks when you need them, eat a yummy snack while you study a hard topic, exercise before studying, do things you like in between learning sessions and learn from your mistakes. That’ll help you succeed as a student long term!
