Retention of nurses in the healtcare sector is one of the biggest issues

One of our most significant issues within the healthcare sector is the retention of our nurses. But how can we look to maintain nursing levels and ensure we continue to hire more nurses into the sector? Firstly we must look at the factors which affect a nurse and cause them to feel the need to leave the profession. So what are they?
Firstly nurses are feeling overworked, underpaid and not valued. So to help we must continue to hire more nurses and ensure they are being supported. Whether this is by making sure they are not running shifts alone or simply taking on too many tasks. Of course, this is not always the easiest thing to do, but if you show them they are valued and appreciated, then this will improve their mentality toward the working environment and make them feel happier within the role.
Another factor which affects the nurses is feeling overwhelmed with the pressure they experience within the role. We must continue to help them feel supported. Then they will be much more confident to work in this role, as often they may feel pressure to get tasks done.
Cost of living
As we all know, there is an economic crisis, and the cost of living has had a massive impact on most people. We find that many nurses have issues with their pay; therefore we must see how we can help them. This could be upskilling nurses and promoting them into higher roles, or increasing the number of incentives for a nurse to stay within the organization. Whichever way we can to help them feel motivated within the role.
Preceptorship Programme
We must continue to look for new ways to help our nurses. Also, reflect on our preceptorship programme and see how you can improve on this. If you do not already have a preceptorship programme, this may be something to look into. Furthermore, we can assess our recruitment levels of international nurses. If we look to bring in high numbers of cohorts for training we can ensure we have trained nurses for the wards and pin registered, meaning they will be there to support the current nurses in the UK wards.
