Yesterday evening on the 8th of September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at the age of 96. She was the world’s longest-serving monarch, who reigned for 70 years. Under a long-standing plan known as “Operation London Bridge,” her death ushers in 10 days of national mourning, starting today.
Born on the 21st of April 1926, Elizabeth was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 following the abdication of Edward VIII. Much of the Her Majesty's childhood was spent surrounded by her family, including her younger sister Princess Margaret. She enjoyed playing games, learning the piano and even performing in plays. When the country went to war, the Queen joined all the other women across the nation in playing their part; she also trained as a mechanic.
She witnessed a period of massive social, economic, political, and technological changes, including the personal pain of her own family’s scandals: she saw the horrors of World War II, the death of former Princess Diana, the agonies of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision of Prince Harry to seek a more private life with his wife Meghan Markle, and the entrance into and exit of the country from the European Union, which was official on the 31st of January 2020.
Coronated on the 2nd of June 1953, Queen Elizabeth II became queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand after the death of her father, George VI, on the 6th of February 1952.
Her son Charles became King upon her death, and will be called King Charles III.
At IELTS Medical we are deeply saddened, and our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time, as we join the nation and the world in mourning Her passing. May You Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth II.
