Progressing in your nursing career

Nursing is a hugely flexible profession. You can choose to work as a general nurse across many different wards or specialise in key areas. If you are looking to grow and develop your skills in order to progress in your career, this blog will give you the information, motivation and inspiration you need.

The NHS Careers framework shows the expected career path of a nurse:

·         Communication

·         Personal and People Development

·         Health, Safety, and Security

·         Service Improvement

·         Quality

·         Equality and Diversity

As you can see, it offers a simple linear approach to your career progression. There are exponential opportunities to advance or diverse your skillset within each element. If you feel lost in progressing with your nursing career, this can help you decide what may be suitable for you and your goals.

When seeking promotions, it's beneficial to pursue further education and a higher degree. The perks of earning a higher degree is increased pay. Taking initiative and requesting more responsibilities may show you are capable of more than your current responsibilities and allow you to build the skills you need to succeed in a more advanced position.

As a nurse, you could train as a midwife, neonatal nurse, health visitor, or district or practice nurse. You could also move into a management role, as a matron or director of nursing. With a postgraduate qualification, you could become an advanced nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist and then a nurse consultant.

Specializing can help you advance your career as it provides a clear path and an end goal. When a nurse specializes in a field, they are capable of further refining their skills to enhance their performance, which may make them more qualified for advanced positions within that field, creating new opportunities to progress.
