What is the OET?

OET (Occupational English Test) is the English test for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practise in an English-speaking environment.

The exam consists of four different aspects: the listening, reading, writing and speaking modules. It is recognised as proof of proficiency for registration, study and work in the healthcare sector, as well as for visas in some countries.

What score do you need to achieve in order to pass your OET?

The NMC requires 350 (grade B) in 3 subtests (listening, reading and speaking) and a 300 (grade C+) in writing. Below I have inserted a table of the OET results for reference.

Do you need help with your OET exam preparation?

Do not worry, here at IELTS Medical we provide OET courses which aim to help you pass your exam first time round. Our most popular course is the 6-week course. It's an intensive course that includes OET Grammar for Nurses, that runs 4 days a week and prepares you to pass the exam on your first attempt. The course helps you to learn Medical English and how to improve the soft communication skills that you will need. This includes interacting with patients, writing letters, reading healthcare texts effectively and understanding the type of audio that you would come across at work. This course will help you to strengthen the skills that will see you through the examination and into your career as a nurse in the UK.

We also offer OET Flex sessions. Our OET flex sessions are flexible one to one session with our expert tutor. It will cover all 4 skills; listening, reading and speaking. You have the option of 10, 20 or 30 sessions. You will be given homework and feedback regularly from the tutor. Not only this but you will also have access to a learner’s portal where you can request your sessions and access other learning materials such as revision videos.
