What’s news in the medical world?

This weeks What’s News is about a new discovery that will save thousands of lives for women susceptible to breast cancer. Now we all know breast cancer is growing more and more common and can be cured or take lives. Researchers in Sweden have made a recent discovery. They have identified a protein that protects breasts from cancerous tumour growth. It can be linked to a better prognosis in breast cancer patients.

Breast Cancer affects 10% of women during their lifetime, usually middle-aged women. It is a major medical and societal burden with on-going research about recoveries, treatment and prevention.

"Identification of new molecular mechanisms that regulate the growth of ER-negative breast cancer is warranted, as these mechanisms may represent novel therapeutic targets," says Per Uhlén, professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet. Studies of tumour cells from breast cancer patients showed that high levels of GIT1 inhibited Notch signalling and protected against tumour growth, while low levels of GIT1 enhanced tumour growth.

This incredible discovery will be further studied for implementation and prevention.
