It's official, the NMC is now accepting C+ for Writing
It's official - after a year of research and extensive reviews of the test, today the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has agreed to relax the English writing standards for international nurses wishing to work in the UK. Instead of a requirement of 350+ in the OET Writing subtest, from 28 January 2020, the NMC will now accept a score of C+ or OET 300+ as satisfactory for the first (international nurses) or final (European nurses) stage of NMC registration.
The change will come into effect from 28 January 2020. Furthermore, OET results achieved after February 2018 that meet the new requirements will also be accepted.
The NMC had received calls to make this decision in order to match its acceptance of the IELTS 6.5 for Writing (post November 2018), after its investigations into the subject revealed that the IELTS 6.5 is equivalent to the OET C+ grade.
This decision is a positive step toward lowering a hurdle that has prevented countless numbers of international nurses from being able to accept posts within the UK healthcare system.
