Increased Capacity for GMC PLAB 2 With New GMC Manchester Test Centre

What is PLAB for doctors?
The GMC Professional Linguistics Assessment Board (PLAB) exam is a two-part exam that provides overseas qualified doctors with a route into UK medical practise. It consists of a theory exam for part one and a practical exam for part 2.
New Satellite GMC PLAB Test Centre
Earlier this year, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid was joined by GMC CEO Charlie Massy and GMC Chair, Professor Dame MacEwan to officially open a temporary PLAB 2 assessment centre. The support centre is based at the GMC’s base in Spinningfields, Manchester and was opened in order to help the main test centre also located in central Manchester.
This means that GMC PLAB 2 is now available at two sites:
GMC Clinical Assessment Centre |
GMC Clinical Assessment Centre
|
The decision to open this satellite centre means that the GMC can boost its testing capacity to cover a shortfall in testing during its four-month long closure last year. With capacity at both centres combined, the GMC is now at pre-Covid testing levels and over 7,000 overseas doctors have 2021 test dates.
What is tested by the PLAB 2 exam?
The PLAB 2 exam assesses overseas doctors’ clinical competence via practical scenarios in purpose-built consultation rooms. GMC examiners test candidates’ ability to handle real life scenarios with a mixture of actors and simulated mannikin playing their patients. Successful completion of the PLAB 2 exam allows candidates to prove that they have the requisite knowledge and soft skills to work in our healthcare system.
