Whether you’re just starting out in your career or just need to change direction, a career plan will help you work out where you want to go and how to get there.
Below is a four-step practical framework you can use to get results:
1. Have an end goal
Aks yourself what you really want. Do you want to be a UK medical professional? Do you want to live in the UK?
Write down your goal and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day.
2. Understand your industry
How well do you know your industry? As a medical professional you know you need to be changing and evolving. Florence Nightingale – Founder of modern nursing said; “Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses. We must be learning all of our lives”. This quote extends to all areas of the medical industry, doctors and midwives are constantly having to adapt and learn new things. What skills can you start developing now to make sure you’re a valuable employee?
3. Be SMART
One thing about creating a plan – it helps to be specific! SMART is a helpful acronym for goal setting. SMART goals are:
• Specific – For each goal, think about what exactly you want to achieve and how you’ll do it.
• Measurable – What does success look like to you? How will you know when you have achieved your goals?
• Achievable – Do you have the skills and resources to achieve the goal, or is there a step missing?
• Relevant – Make sure that each goal you set will be relevant to your career. Remember, these goals are to help your career journey.
• Time-bound – Give yourself a date to achieve each goal by; “I will achieve this goal by XX/XX/XXXX”
4. Career mindset
Studies have shown that people who operate from a growth mindset learn more and are more successful. It starts with being willing to put yourself out there and tell people what you’re interested in learning. Being communicative about your goals- even if they seem far off- is a great step to empowering yourself.
