How to apply for Foundation Year programme (medical internship)

If you’re graduating medical school abroad but would love to work permanently as a doctor in the UK, instead of completing your internship in your country, you can apply for the UK Foundation Year Programme. This program lasts 2 years – the first, you have only a provisional license to practice, but upon completion, you receive a full license to practice in the following year. When completing both years, you can then start your desired residency.
Eligibility criteria for the Foundation Year programme as an international student:
1. first of all, check this website to see if your medical credentials are accepted by the GMC:
2. Make sure you get a provisional license from the GMC. That means you’ll have to pass both PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 (theory and skills medical exams, respectively)
3. Have written approval of your school’s Dean to apply for a UK Foundation Year programme.
4. Show proof of English proficiency (IELTS or OET)
If you meet the above criteria, you can then apply to check if you are eligible before applying for the programme itself. Every international student will have to go through this extra step.

1. Fill in the online eligibility form
2. Upload supporting evidence:
· Photograph of your Passport page containing personal details
· English proficiency certificate
· Medical degree certificate
· Dean’s statement
· Evidence of your right to work in the UK
· Passport photo
After that’s sent and you’re found eligible, you can apply for the programme itself as soon as the application is open.
