Habits and study tips for successful students Here is something we can both agree on... Preparing for exams can be overwhelming, especially if you are trying to manage home and work responsibilities on top of your studies. And then we didn’t even mention social life and personal life.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution. With planning your studies, creating time management, and using other tricks to create balance in your life, preparing for exams won’t be difficult anymore. The first step is to believe in yourself. Having confidence is essential and it will help you to have control over your time. In this blog post we will give some extra tips and strategies on building important habits for studying effectively.

1. Ask questions

“The only bad question is the one not asked”. We completely agree with this statement! When participating in training, you are accountable for your learning. It is important to recognise when you need help so you can get the support you need on time. It is very important because whatever you study, lectures are built on each other, so if you miss essential information, you won’t be able to catch up with further lectures.

Our tutors are dedicated to support you on your journey to becoming a qualified healthcare professional in the UK. They have years of experience in teaching and they will be there for you anytime you will have questions for the duration of your course. The best way to reach them out is to ask them privately. It can be for example after your class. Not only your tutor is a great source of support; your classmates can help you as well. If you know someone who is a very quick learner and usually has a clear understanding of classes, you can ask them as well.

2.Take breaks

It is great if you are focused on becoming a qualified healthcare professional, but keep in mind: you are human, too, who has limits. It is necessary to know when to study and when to take a break. Making time to relax helps you to get your focus back after having a long study session. When making a break, you can either grab a snack, play relaxing music for a few minutes, or watch something quickly- we recommend not to watch something very different from your studies though, because your attention may be deflected. You can experiment with what works the best for you, but most of all, make sure that you plan and enjoy your breaks.

We would like to note as well that when you are feeling like you need a break from studying, it is important to not fall trap to the thinking that you need to keep cramming. It is not good to think that more is better, because taking a break actually makes you more productive and your concentration will be better.

As we mentioned before, planning your breaks is important. There is an effective strategy: set timer for 45 minutes, then take a break for the next 15. If you lose concentration in the first 45 minutes, start with less time and increase the time later on. The key is that in that 45 minutes you really just focus on studying, and when the break time comes, you really take a break.

3. Make a long term study plan

As we mentioned in the previous point, planning your breaks is essential. But not only making time to relax is important, but to organize your study schedule as a whole. Your course period will be a smoother ride if you manage your time effectively because you will always know what to prepare for.

A good way to organize your studies for the long term is to look at the structure of your books. You will have great insight into what the next lecture will be about, so preparing for it in advance will be definitely beneficial for you. Even if you don’t want to take extra time to prepare for it, at least you will know what to expect.

Another important thing to do is to check your exam dates. Once you know when your exam will be, you can book for example a classroom to practice in advance of any assignment deadline. Furthermore, you will have an idea about how much time you have for certain topics. Use an old fashion planner to write down the important dates or use an online planner.

4.Know your learning style

It is a well-known fact that everyone learns differently. Some need to hear information, some need to see it, while others learn kinetically. Everyone needs to discover which learning style is the most effective for them. Once you know which way works the best for you, you can use it to your advantage. For example, people who are kinetic learners, remember most of the information when they write out their notes. The reason behind it is that the motion of writing helps them to remember. On the other hand, visual learners can’t recall information by writing- they need to see what they study about. If you believe that you are a visual learner, then you learn the best through videos and pictures instead of just listening to lectures and reading. So for you, it can be a life-saver to watch YouTube videos about the topics.

Many students make it to the college level or even get their diploma without knowing what their unique learning style is. In general, there is no “right” way, but there is a right way that will work for you the best. We advise you to experiment to find out what your learning style is.

5. Test yourself

One of the most effective ways of memorizing is to regularly test yourself. You can quiz yourself from your notes, do online quizzes or test your knowledge with your classmates; it is a great opportunity to build connections as well! Consider that there are multiple ways to test yourself and you just have to explore what works the best for you.

If you want to test your knowledge playfully, consider purchasing one of our study games!

6. Study every day

It is not possible to cram a week’s worth of study into a few hours on the weekend, even for the best students. You have to commit to spend a little time on your medical studies every day. The reason is that you will feel less overwhelmed. When you stress less, you can retain more information and you will enjoy studying.

7. Get to know your classmates

There are several reasons why you should get to know your fellow students. In general, they can be a wonderful resource of support, knowledge, and you can be fun for each other. Keeping in mind that participating in our course and focusing on your studies is important, but a little fun never held back anybody from progressing.

One of the ways you can connect studying with socializing is to study together. Some people like to be on their own, but studying with others helps provide moral support and encouragement. It can be a good idea to get together with your classmates and put your heads together to quiz each other, share study tips, and discuss certain topics. Studies have shown that the best number is 3 when it comes to forming a study group.
