Getting Back into the Groove after a Christmas Break

Christmas is over and the new year is here!

It’s always sad when you realise the holiday season is ending and it is back to work. There is an actual word for the feeling you get, it's called the ‘post-holiday blues. Symptoms may include frustration, insomnia, low energy, anxiety and lack of concentration. People usually find it difficult to get back to their pre-holiday routine, catching up with pending tasks and backlogged work etc. No more days spent lounging in your pyjamas, surrounded by half-eaten boxes of chocolate, and no more alarm-free mornings... It’s time to get back to work!

Researchers have found that a week of irregular sleep and unsavoury eating habits can induce what has been dubbed as ‘social jet lag’. ‘Social jet lag occurs when our internal biological clock gets out of rhythm with the external environment,’ Dr Carmel Harrington, Australian sleep expert and member of the Sleep Health Foundation. According to Dr Harrington, the reason why you’re feeling so deflated is that your regular bedtimes are being thrown out of the window. Our bodies reset every morning when we wake up, at this time our clock sets the bodily rhythms for the day including a sleep time that is set for roughly 16 hours later. There is no way to get back the sleep you lost, but we can start making ourselves feel a lot better by getting the sleep we need.

Try getting up at the same time every day, exercise for at least 20 minutes each day and try to deal with the issues of the day during the day by getting things done and finding solutions. Also, avoid sleeping in for more than an hour past your regular wake-up time at the weekends and refrain from having caffeine after midday and refrain from having a large meal even three hours before bedtime.

Holidays are over but we are back!
