Everything you need to know about the RCA
Many doctors struggle with the Recorded Consultation Assessment (RCA) as this is a new exam introduced to the MRCGP due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
That outbreak meant the CSA couldn't take place so they had to find a way to replace it and keep doctors passing their exams.
This is why I want to help you get access to all the information available, so you can start preparing for the exam in the best way.
What is the RCA exam?
The RCA stands for Recorded Consultation Assessment, it was introduced due to the covid 19 outbreak to replace the CSA (Clinical Skills Assessment).
RCA tested the ability to gather information and apply learned understanding of disease processes and person-centred care appropriately in a primary care context. Then with that information doctors need to make evidence-based decisions, and communicate effectively with patients and colleagues all throughout the consultation.
How to practice for your RCA exam?
The best way to prepare for your exam is to see patients in general practice. You will gain evidence of your progression from your WPBA observations such as COTs and CATs.
Feedback from your Clinical and Educational Supervisors will help you understand what areas you need to work on for your exam and in the further of your healthcare career.
How is the RCA marked?
The RCA is marked in a different way to the CSA but following a similar criterion.
You have to record yourself while doing this exam and send it off where it will be marked by an examiner who will make a global judgement of that consultation.
You will gain marks by using the three main domains which are data gathering, clinical management and interpersonal skills.
Each domain will get an individual grade that ranges between Clear Pass / Pass / Fail or Clear Fail.
Other key points to remember
- The first ten minutes of the consultation submitted will be assessed. This time will not include any time for verbal consent that is recorded.
- The time taken for examinations will be part of that ten minutes. The camera should run continuously and not be turned off during the consultation.
- The results are given out in two groups due to the number of doctors taking the exam. The First results are given out in July and the other is in August.
