Episode 9 - The One With Priscilla, Doctor

Christina: Hello and welcome to another episode of Licence to Practice from IELTS Medical. Today we will be talking to Brazilian doctor, Priscilla. We go into quite a lot of detail about the GMC registration process which is something I don't believe we've talked about in a lot of detail before. So let's give her a call!

Christina: Hi Priscilla.

Priscilla: Hello, how are you?

Christina: I'm fine thank you, how are you today?

Priscilla: I'm very well thank you.

Christina: I'm glad to hear it. Thank you so much for doing this for coming on the podcast and sharing your story. So could you just start by telling us a little bit about you?

Priscilla: Yeah, I'm a Brazilian doctor and I came to the UK last year with my husband. Now it's my..actually, it's my second experience in the UK. The first one was 10 years ago but I had small kids and I preferred to stay at home. I wasn't working and then I was happy like this. But this time I really wanted to work in the UK and then I looked for an English course because the first thing that the GMC asks for is your English. And that's it and I started my long journey to have my certificate accepted here. It's not easy but I could finish the journey.

Christina: So you said it's not easy. How did you find the registration process? You said it's been long.

Priscilla: Yeah, the first thing is to have an English certificate. I have chosen the OET. And then you have to study for it and do the exam. And after that.. something important: I have citizenship from Luxembourg and it's not like to make everything easier but it's a different route. I could send all my papers to GMC and that's the long process that I've mentioned.

Christina: Yes.

Priscilla: Because they ask for lots of papers and lots of proofs. And we have to send them reports and all your certificates. It's a very long process, it took me like six months.

Christina: Oh did it?

Priscilla: Yeah yeah and was the worst part for me because I found it very stressful.

Christina: Yeah I'm sure getting all that information together.

Priscilla: Exactly! It's like you think that you have sent everything and they send you an email, oh I need something different I need more information I need more reports. And you have to find someone in Brazil..your colleague or someone that you had worked with to send to you more proof that you are really a good doctor. This kind of things I can understand because of course, they have to make sure that you have the qualifications and a good standard. They have to make sure that all the doctors are good doctors, they're right! But from our side as a doctor, you feel really stressed sometimes.

Christina: Well I hope it was worth it.

Priscilla: Yeah it was yeah yeah!

Christina: Okay good. So why did you choose the UK?

Priscilla: Because of my husband's job, I'm here because of him. It's not like that I had chosen the UK it happened. But I'm quite happy, I love this country it's a great place to live.

Christina: Oh good I'm glad, I'm glad about that. So just going back to the registration process you said that you chose the OET over the IELTS. Was there a reason for that?

Priscilla: Yeah because IELTS it's more open.

Christina: It's generic.

Priscilla: Yeah, the OET is for doctors and healthcare workers and it's much more focused on what we need to know in our day by day and the vocabulary and everything it's much more specific. I think it's the best way to have an English certificate for healthcare professionals and healthcare workers.

Christina: Yeah that makes sense. So do you have any advice for people for doctors wanting to come over here and work in the UK that hasn’t maybe started the process yet?

Priscilla: The first advice that I have really started to get it was from the course from Nonny and of course on the GMC web page. But you have to look for yourself I think they are quite clear but what I missed it was that I think they should have a direct line in GMC. I found difficult not having someone to talk to because you have to look everything on the website and basically, you don't have a person.

Christina: Like a point of contact.

Priscilla: Yeah, You don't have it you have to look on the website and find out yourself. But it's a very very very good website and you can find everything there.

Christina: So go on the website and do a course.

Priscilla: Yeah.

Christina: A piece of advice well good, good advice. Well, thank you for coming on and sharing your story.

Priscilla: Thank you very much it's my pleasure!

Christina: So have a lovely day and yeah thank you, see you later.

Priscilla: Thank you, see you bye.

Christina: Thank you so much for listening and thank you again to Priscilla for coming on that the podcast and sharing your story and all that great advice I really hope you enjoyed that episode and we will see you next time. And as always to your success.
