Benefits of working for the NHS

Nurses and doctors in the UK work for the NHS (National Health Service). The NHS is a publicly funded health system by the government from the general tax system. International doctors and nurses may not be aware of the endless opportunities and benefits of working for the NHS. Whatever grade or speciality you join, you will become an integral part of the NHS with access to all the benefits.

Everyone that works for the NHS is offered an annual salary that matches their role. This salary can increase through extra training and responsibilities when you develop and specialise in your career. You are entitled to 27 days annual leave with 8 bank holidays on top of your annual leave. Therefore that’s 35 days of annual leave minimum per year. The longer you work for the NHS the more annual leave you earn. After +10 years you have up to 33 days of annual leave with 8 extra days of bank holidays.

Regardless of how long you work for the NHS, all pregnant employees are entitled to 1-year of maternity leave. Fathers are entitled to a 2-week paternity leave. Don’t worry, 2 weeks may seem short, however in some cases parents can share the 1-year maternity leave between them. You are also entitled to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave for children under the age of 18. Pay enhancements are rewarded through shifts, working overtime, calls and working out of hours.

Okay, now this is a benefit that is just exclusive to the NHS. Members are entitled to discounts with many shops and services. These include restaurants, hotels as well and shops and services. You will be pleasantly surprised how many do offer discounts. You can save a lot of money when taking holiday breaks in the UK.

Nurses and doctors in training receive many additional benefits. Study leave, study sessions, and a study budget are just a few to mention. This means you gain access to all the NHS benefits plus extra while you develop and progress in your career.
