How to use the BD SafetyGlide™ Insulin Syringe with 6mm Needle

What is the SafetyGlide™ Insulin Syringe with 6mm Needle?

The SafetyGlide™ Insulin Syringe with 6mm Needle is a needle used to administer insulin. It is currently offering a high level of protection for healthcare workers and patients with a 6-mm, 31-gauge needle designed for safe, less painful injections when compared to longer and thicker standard insulin syringes we use. Not only does this provide lower risk of needle stick injuries for healthcare workers and lower risk of intramuscular injection for patients it also has a one-handed activation of the safety mechanism to help prevent needle stick injury. It is available in 1ml, 1/2ml and 3/10ml.

How do I administer Insulin using this needle?

1.       Confirm that you have the correct type of Insulin and check the expiry date.

2.       Verify the patient identifiers and choose a healthy injection site. The abdomen, thigh, buttocks or back of arms are recommended.

NOTE: Always make sure that you are rotating between the injection areas and make sure that injections are always a finger’s width apart.

3.       Cleanse the skin and once the patient is ready, prepare the insulin syringe for injection. To do this, you need to remove the orange safety cap and rotate the safety arm to make sure that you are able to see the unit scale. You then need to pull the insulin syringe out to the desired number of units. The amount of air in the insulin syringe should equal the amount of insulin you take out.

4.       Place the insulin vial on a flat surface and wipe the top with an alcohol swab and puncture the vial.

NOTE: Puncture the centre of the vial at 90 degrees to avoid needle damage.

5.       Push the plunger down completely to inject the air into the vial. Turn the vial and insulin syringe upside down and draw the number of units needed into the insulin syringe.

6.       Press the plunger slowly and steadily until the full dose of insulin has been delivered to the patient.

NOTE: Injections with a 6mm insulin syringe needle should not be given into a pinch-up.

7.       Once completed, point the insulin syringe away from yourself and others and activate the safety mechanism immediately. Use your finger to move the push rod completely forward until it is fully extended, needle tip is covered and you hear a click sound. Immediately dispose of the used insulin syringe in a sharps container.
