Advice on how to pass your OSCE exam the first time

- By (29 articles)

The OSCE exam is your third and last step to being a fully registered nurse or midwife in the UK, and to being able to operate fully. Just the word ‘OSCE’ can send students into a frenzy of fear, and this is partly because engaging in roleplay and performing a mock situation or having to take a history from real patients within stations while being assessed and examined, is stomach-turning for medical students.

At IELTS Medical, we have supported over 5,522 healthcare professionals, both in-person and remotely by using video conferencing. By seeing how exams are graded and assessed, and with all our tutors being real nurses and midwives working in hospitals, care homes, and GP practices, we have put in place the real solution to address the high standards required by the healthcare industry and the need to assist international healthcare professionals with achieving compliance as quickly and as efficiently as possible. So say goodbye to exam failure and hassles. Here are some tips for students that will hopefully give you some support and help you relax:

1) Learn from previous OSCEs.

Do not let your mind trick you into thinking you are at risk of making mistakes you already made. Remember what went well, what could I have done better, and apply reflective feedback.

2) Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

An OSCE scenario can be played out at home with friends, family, or other students playing the parts of patient actors. The most convincing and well-prepared students can expect to do well in their OSCEs, and rehearsing different stations at home should be an integral part of your preparation.

3) Believe you are a healthcare professional.

If you can show the examiners in an OSCE that you are already a convincing professional who assesses scenarios objectively, you will go a long way towards passing your assessment.

4) Use the reading time before each station.

Use this time to take a deep breath. Let any thoughts about other stations leave your conscience. The upcoming station is the only thing that matters. Remember what is called the ABC of situational awareness: Awareness of the environment; Belief in your gut feelings; Changing what’s wrong.

5) Watch OSCE videos on YouTube.

Watching recorded examples of a great OSCE performance can really help you gain insights into what you need to do to impress the examiners. YouTube has a wealth of examples and mock OSCE stations where you observe candidates going through the OSCE process.
