Expanding your vocabulary is very important when preparing for your IELTS or OET exams. Having a wide range of vocabulary will also benefit you in your everyday life as it will determine your status in education and profession. There are many tips on how to improve your vocabulary at home. What are these tips? you may ask well the tips I would suggest are:

Developing a reading habit.  Constantly reading will help you improve your vocabulary as you will come across words you have never heard of before which you may then want to research then begin to look at synonyms for that word and how the word is used in a sentence. Read as many books as humanly possible but don’t limit yourself to only reading just books. Make sure you read EVERYTHING for example, newspapers, articles, turn your subtitles on when watching videos on YouTube, Netflix or even on your TV, read the ingredients on food packets and shampoo bottles. if you are planning on sitting the OET exam, make sure you learn terms that are used by healthcare professionals.

Play word games.  Playing word games such as scrabble and crosswords is a great way to help you improve your vocabulary and is also a good way of making your learning process more fun as you are also able to get your family and friends involved to help you with. If you want to be efficient, make sure you make a note of the words you learn while playing the games and research them to see what the meaning of the word is and how they can be used in a sentence.  Ensure that you remember these words by regularly checking the list of words and the meanings of them, this could also be done by using flashcards.

Conversing. Another way in which you are able to improve your vocabulary is conversing with both fluent English speakers and also fellow English learners. Go to dinners with your friends and colleagues, ask them to give you feedback on your pronunciation and make sure to ask them of any words you don’t understand the meaning of. Join a study group with other English learners whether that is in person or online, try to speak about one another and make a commitment to only speak English when meeting in a group. This way you are able to improve your English and also get much more use to speaking English in your day-to-day life.
