Do you need to take the Legacy (6 Stations) OSCE or the Test of Competence 21 (10 Stations) OSCE?
There are two version of the NMC OSCE: the Legacy (6 Stations) OSCE or the Test of Competence 21 (10 Stations OSCE). How do you know which you need to take? It depends on the type of CBT you've taken.
Which CBT have you taken?
Taking the CBT before 2nd August 2021 meant that you would have taken the Test of Competence 2014 CBT. The Test of Competence is made up of two parts, so if you've taken the Old CBT, you will be eligible for the Legacy OSCE aka 6-Stations OSCE. If you've taken your CBT after 2nd August 2021, then you will be taking the Test of Competence 21 or 10 Stations OSCE.
Is the Test of Competence 21 harder?
That's a very good question and the answer is... it's different. There are some stations that are exclusive to the 10 Stations OSCE. For example, Professional Values and Evidence Based Practice are two mandatory stations that form part of the new NMC OSCE - whichever type you're taking eg. Adult / Mental Health / Children's / Learning Disability or Midwifery. Aside from that, the APIE and documentation is the same across both versions and the skills are different to those of their predecessors.
Which preparation materials are available for the NMC OSCE?
Here at IELTS Medical, we have plenty of preparation materials for the NMC OSCE. We provide pre-course books in the post and access to our Medics Portal to learners before the course. We then provide you with the Core course which consists of APIE + Documentation on Day 1; Skills on Day 2 and a Full Mock Examination on Day 3. Then some of our nurses will return for a 4th or 5th day to practice their APIE; skills or have a 2nd full mock examination. Post course support is also provided in the form of Zoom support and further content via the Medics Portal. It really is a winning combination that sees nurses and midwives through their exams the first time.
